Optimal Weight Success Is Possible

Insulin Resistance (or impaired insulin sensitivity) is another age-related, avoidable condition that is on the rise in the United States. While insulin resistance has an age-related component to it and features some genetic predictors of its development, there are a myriad of lifestyle and pharmaceutical approaches to preventing or reversing its effects.

Its association with the dreaded metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and risk for heart disease, other conditions like strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, and sleep apnea are well established. Diabetes receives all the press and rightfully so—it is a full-blown epidemic.

35 million adults in the US currently have diabetes (10.5% of the population). 88 million people (about twice the population of California) aged 18 years or older have prediabetes (35% of the US population).

More shocking is the vast number of adolescent and adult people in the US who suffer from insulin resistance (a precursor to diabetes). Insulin resistance occurs along a continuum with the most severe forms diagnosed as Diabetics and the milder forms completely ignored and provided little if any advice or guidance on how to treat the condition.

It is this group that must be provided with an aggressive path to elimination of this chronic, progressive disease. Yet, this is the group that is most ignored and least intervened. All resources are devoted to the full-blown diabetics, while the group with the most potential for reversal, elimination, and life prolongation receives little if any treatment or guidance from their providers.

Common Symptoms of insulin resistance include

  • Chronic Fatigue and Malaise
  • Constantly hungry and craving carbs
  • Weight gain – particularly midsection and visceral (around your organs)
  • Inability to lose weight
  • Brain fog
  • Constant thirst
  • Irregular periods
